To many, the idea of plummeting head-first through the course just a few centimetres off the ice may seem terrifying but to competitors and fans, it is a thrilling prospect (although they too may find it scary).

In concept, the sport of Skeleton is similar to Luge, with the main difference being that the athletes lie on their stomachs. The sled has no steering mechanism or brakes and is controlled by the rider’s dragging a foot on the ice and subtly shifting his or her weight. The rider wears a helmet with chin guard, gloves, an aerodynamic bodysuit, and spiked shoes.

There are two events at the Winter Games, one for women, and one for men. As in Luge, the timings of four runs are added up to decide the results.
