2024 Sports Calendar: Road to Paris

We've hit a hundred days to go until the Paris 2024 Olympic Games! It's time to start getting excited about the Games, with the next few months filled with last chance qualifiers and preparatory events. Here's a schedule of the best sporting events to look forward to in the next 100 days, including but certainly not limited to, the remaining opportunities for Indian athletes to qualify.

Mar 31 - Apr 11: Weightlifting - IWF World Cup 2024 (OQE)
Last chance Olympic qualifier, featuring Mirabai Chanu. Best weightlifting competition of this Olympic cycle
Apr 3 - 23: Chess - FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024
Tournament to decide challenger for the World Championship. 3 Indians on the men's side, 2 on the women's
Apr 11 - 19: Shooting - Final Olympic Qualifier Rifle/Pistol (OQE)
Last chance for Olympic qualification in Rifle & Pistol events. Indian women will look to complete quota with 2nd spot in the 10m air pistol
Apr 15: Track Cycling - Olympic Qualifying Rankings (OQE)
Rankings for Paris qualification to be finalised
Apr 16 - 17: Football - UCL Quarters 2nd Leg
Four thrilling deciders set up in the final 8 of the men’s Champions League
Apr 17 - 20: Gymnastics - FIG Apparatus World Cup - Doha (OQE)
Pranati Nayak and Deepa Karmakar will represent India in the Vault - no Olympic spots available for them at this meet, however.
Apr 18 - 21: Canoe Sprint - Asian Olympic Qualifier (OQE)
Final chance for Indian hopefuls to compete for Olympic qualification
Apr 18 - 27: Shooting - Indian Shooting Trials 1&2 (OQE)
First 2 legs of 4-leg trials for India’s team to Paris in Rifle & Pistol events
Apr 19 - 21: Asian Wrestling Qualifier (OQE)
With only 1 Indian wrestler currently qualified to Paris, this is a key event to secure more spots. Look out for Vinesh Phogat, who has had to fight not only her competitors, but also Indian sporting authorities, to get herself there
Apr 19 - 21: Rowing - Asian & Oceania Qualifying Regatta (OQE)
Multiple Indian rowers will be competing for Olympic quota spots for Paris
Apr 19 - 27: Swimming - Chinese Swimming Trials (OQE)
With the growing strength of Chinese swimming, this will be a word-class meet with spots on the Olympic team on the line. It will also indicate the sort of form some of the stars of the pool are in while preparing for the Games
Apr 19 - 29: Shooting - Final Olympic Qualifier Shotgun (OQE)
Last chance for Indians to earn additional spots in Trap & Skeet events
Apr 20: Athletics - Xiamen Diamond League
The Diamond League will provide a series of high-profile events for athletes attempting to hit qualifying marks and gan ranking points for Paris. It will also help gauge athletes’ form and preview exciting matchups. Abdulla Aboobacker will represent India in the M Triple Jump. Look out for Paulino (DOM) and Mondo Duplantis (SWE) to open their outdoor seasons
Apr 20: Football - UWCL Semi-Finals 1st Leg
Barcelona, Chelsea, Lyon, and PSG make up the final 4 in the women’s Champions League
Apr 20 - 27: Sailing - Final Olympic Qualifier (OQE)
Last chance for sailors to make it to Paris. Expect to see several Indian boats vying for quota spots
Apr 21: Athletics - Race Walking Team World Championships (OQE)
Key qualifying event for Paris and a first chance to see the Marathon mixed relay on the global stage. India will send a strong team
Apr 23 - 25: Formula 2 - Mid-Season Test in Barcelona
Look out for Kush Maini!
Apr 27: Athletics - Shanghai Diamond League
Sreeshankar will compete for India in the M Long Jump
Apr 27 - 28: Fencing - Asia & Oceania Olympic Qualifier (OQE)
Last chance for Indian fencers like Bhavani Devi to make it to the Olympics
Apr 27 - May 5: Badminton - Thomas & Uber Cup Finals
Finals of the major team competitions in world Badminton, with India sending teams for both.
Apr 28: Weightlifting - Olympic Rankings Deadline (OQE)
Final Olympic qualifying rankings to be confirmed. Mirabai will rank no 2 in the W 49kg
Apr 28: Football - UWCL Semi-Finals 2nd Leg
Deciders for Chelsea v Barcelona and PSG v Lyon
Apr 28 - May 5: Cycling - La Vuelta Femenina
First women’s grand tour of the year
Apr 30: Badminton - Road to Paris Rankings (OQE)
Deadline for Olympic qualification rankings for Badminton, to determine which Indians will qualify

May 1 - 12: Shooting - ISSF World Cup Baku
First world cup after Olympic qualifiers - featuring all disciplines. Indians’ performances could be telling for Olympic medal hopes
May 2 - 4: Rhythmic Gymnastics - Asian Championships (OQE)
Only chance for Indians to qualify for the Olympics
May 3 - 5: Rugby - Singapore SVNS
Penultimate event of the current edition of the SVNS series. There is a tie for the overall lead on the women’s side, and the men’s overall champion could be decided here
May 4 - 5: Athletics - World Relays (OQE)
Main qualifier for the relay events at the Olympics. Indian 4x400 teams will be in the hunt for quota spots
May 4 - 26: Cycling - Giro d’Italia
The first men’s grand tour of the year
May 7: Table Tennis - Mixed Doubles Olympic Ranking (OQE)
Olympic qualifiers for the mixed doubles event to de finalised. The Indian pair is unlikely to make it
May 9 -12: Wrestling - Final Olympic Qualifier (OQE)
Last chance for wrestlers across the globe to secure Olympic spots. Indians will try again in events they could not secure in the Asian qualifiers
May 9 - 18: Squash - PSA World Championships
Biggest global tournament in the soon-to-be Olympic sport of Squash
May 10: Athletics - Diamond League Doha
Slated to be Neeraj Chopra’s season-opener in the Javelin
May 10 - 19: Shooting - Indian Shooting Trials 3&4 (OQE)
Second half of trials for the Indian Olympic team in rifle and pistol events
May 12 - 18: BMX - World Championships (OQE)
Last qualifying event for the Olympics in BMX racing
May 16 - 19: Artistic Gymnastics - Men’s Asian Championships (OQE)
Last chance for Indians to attempt Olympic qualification
May 16-19: BMX, Climbing, Skate, Breaking - Olympic Qualifier Series I (OQE)
Major qualifying event in the newest additions to the Olympic program - sport climbing, BMX freestyle, breaking (dancesport), and skateboarding
May 17: Triathlon - Mixed Relay Olympic Qualifier (OQE)
Last major qualifying race for the exciting mixed relay event for Triathlon
May 17 - 19: Formula 2 - Imola GP

Biggest global championship outside the Paralympics for para-athletics. Should feature multiple Indian medal hopefuls

Last shot at Olympic qualification for rowers from across the globe
May 19 - 23: Judo - World Championships
The world’s best will fight for medals and a chance to score significant ranking points for Olympic qualification
May 20 - Jun 9: Tennis - Roland Garros
Sumit Nagal is in good clay court form heading into the French Open
May 22 - 26: Hockey - FIH Pro League - Belgium Leg
The Indian men's and women's team each play their next 2 fixtures
May 23 - 26: Formula 2 - Monaco GP

May 23 - Jun 3: Boxing - Final Olympic Qualifier (OQE)
The last chance for boxers to earn Olympic tickets. A particularly important competition for India, who presently have no male boxers qualified for Paris.
May 24 - 26: Artistic Gymnastics - Women’s Asian Championships (OQE)
Final chance for gymnasts like Pranati Nayak and Deepa Karmakar to try earning Olympic spots
May 25: Athletics - Diamond League Eugene
The Prefontaine Classic will have some of the biggest stars of the sport headlining the event
May 25: Rugby - European Rugby Champions Cup Final
The biggest game in domestic rugby, to decide the champions of Europe
May 25: Football - Women’s Champions League Final
The biggest game in domestic football, to decide the champions of Europe
May 27: Triathlon - Olympic Qualification Rankings (OQE)
The deadline to determine the qualifying rankings for the Triathlon in Paris
May 28: Mountain Bike - Olympic Qualifying Rankings (OQE)
Deadline to finalise qualification for Mountain Biking at the Olympics
May 30: Athletics - Diamond League Oslo
A chance to see the likes of Karsten Warholm (NOR) and Jakob Ingebrigtsen (NOR) in action
May 31 - Jun 2: Rugby - Madrid SVNS
The finale of the SVNS series which will decide the champions, and will be the last chance to see most teams in action until the Paris Olympics
May 31 - Jun 8: Shooting - ISSF World Cup Munich
With the Indian Olympic team decided by this point, this will be a key event for rifle & pistol shooters in the lead-up to the Games. Last chance for international athletes to gain ranking points
June
June 1 - 9: Hockey - FIH Pro League - England Leg
The Indian teams finish their campaign with 4 games each in London
June 2: Athletics - Diamond League Stockholm
A chance to see Femke Bol (NED) and Shericka Jackson (JAM) in action! And what might Duplantis do at home?
June 4: BMX - Olympic Qualification Rankings (OQE)
Olympic qualifying rankings for BMX racing to be finalised
June 7 - 9: Canoe Slalom - Kayak Cross Olympic Qualifiers (OQE)
Last chance for athletes to qualify for Paris, but a first chance for spectators to get a taste of a new racing discipline coming to the Olympics
June 9: Shooting - Final Qualifying Rankings (OQE)
Deadline for Olympic qualifying rankings in Shooting, which will finalise all Olympic qualifiers. India has already qualified for all events, so will not be eligible for additional places via rankings
June 10: Tennis - Olympic Rankings (OQE)
Olympic qualification for Tennis to be finalised via the world rankings on this deadline. Indians will want to look out for Rohan Bopanna and Sumit Nagal
June 10: Beach Volleyball - Olympic Qualification Rankings (OQE)
Deadline for Olympic qualification via world rankings in beach volleyball
June 10 - 15: Swimming - Australian Olympic Trials (OQE)
Australian trials are almost as good as any global competition. It will be a world-class event, particularly in women’s freestyle events, and a chance to preview Paris Olympic champions
June 10 - 16: Modern Pentathlon - World Championships (OQE)
Perhaps the last world championships with the current Olympic format of the sport before Showjumping is replaced by Obstacle racing. This will also be a key qualification event for Paris
June 14 - July 14: Football - EURO 2024
June 15 - 16: Archery - Final Olympic Qualifier (OQE)
Last qualifying tournament for archers hoping to make it to Paris. A key competition for India, who have just one archer qualified so far
June 15 - 16: Racing - 24 Hours of Le Mans
Set to be the biggest edition of the iconic endurance race in recent history, with at least 23 cars in the top Hypercar category
June 15 - 23: Swimming - USA Olympic Trials (OQE)
Similar to Australia’s, USA’s Olympic trials are almost as good as a global championship. The depth in some events means it is sometimes easier to medal at World Champs than to make the US Olympic team
June 17: Golf - Men’s Olympic Rankings (OQE)
Deadline to decide Olympic qualifiers based on men’s world rankings
June 17: Modern Pentathlon - Olympic Qualifying Rankings (OQE)
Paris qualification through Olympic rankings to be finalised
June 17: Volleyball - Women’s Olympic Rankings (OQE)
World rankings at this deadline will determine which women’s teams make it to Paris
June 18: Table Tennis - Singles Olympic Rankings (OQE)
Olympic qualifying rankings on this date will determine qualifiers for Paris in TT singles events. India has already secured quotas through the team event, but rankings will decide which athletes go to the Games
June 19 - 23: Beach Volleyball - Asian Cup Finals (OQE)
Final chance for Asian teams to earn Paris qualification. India is still in the men’s competition
Jun 20-23: BMX, Climbing, Skate, Breaking - Olympic Qualifier Series II (OQE)
Final qualifying event in the newest additions to the Olympic program
June 20 - 23: Volleyball - Women’s Nations League Finals
Like the FIH Pro League, but for Volleyball
June 21 - 23: Rugby - 7’s Final Olympic Qualifier (OQE)
The tournament to award the last remaining spot for rugby 7’s at Paris 2024. On the men’s side, neither of GBR or RSA have qualified yet!
June 21 - 23: Formula 2: Spanish GP

June 21 - 30: Athletics - US Olympic Trials (OQE)
Some of the best athletes in the world will compete for coveted spots on the US Olympic team. Keep an eye out for McLaughlin, Lyles, Knighton, and Crouser.
June 23: Swimming - Qualifying Times Cutoff (OQE)
The deadline for swimmers to put in performances under the Olympic Qualification and Consideration times required to make it to Paris
June 23: Judo - Olympic Qualifying Rankings (OQE)
Judo qualification for Paris will be finalised based on rankings at this deadline
June 24: Golf - Women’s Olympic Rankings (OQE)
Deadline to decide Olympic qualifiers based on women’s world rankings
